How to Register an MSME in India: Complete Procedure and Documents Needed

MSME registration officially recognizes Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in India and gives them access to government benefits to help their business grow.

What is MSME Registration?

MSME registration, also called Udyam registration, was introduced by the government in 2006 for small and medium businesses in India. It is not mandatory, but registering your business is beneficial because it gives access to many advantages like tax benefits, easier business setup, loans, and credit facilities.

The registration process is completely online and can be done through the Udyam registration portal. Only businesses that meet the MSME classification criteria can apply.

Earlier, MSMEs were classified based on the investment in plant, machinery, or equipment. Later, the government updated the rules to include annual turnover along with investment limits.

The Budget 2025 revised the MSME classification, which is effective from 1 April 2025. Below are the old and new limits:

MSME Registration Eligibility

Any business in manufacturing, services, wholesale, or retail that meets the revised MSME limits for investment and annual turnover can apply for MSME registration. Eligible entities include:

• Individuals, startups, business owners, and entrepreneurs
• Private and public limited companies
• Sole proprietorships
• Partnership firms
• Limited Liability Partnerships (LLPs)
• Self Help Groups (SHGs)
• Co-operative societies
• Trusts

Documents Required for MSME Registration

To register your MSME, you need:

• Aadhaar number
• PAN number

You do not need to upload these documents. Just enter your Aadhaar number, and the Udyam portal will automatically fetch your PAN and GST-linked details from the government database.

Note: GST registration is not required for businesses that don’t need it under GST law. But if your business must have GST registration, you need to enter your GSTIN while registering for MSME (Udyam registration).

How to Apply for MSME Registration Online

MSME registration is completely online. To register, businesses need to visit the Udyam registration portal: udyamregistration.gov.in.

MSME registration can be done under two categories:

1. New Entrepreneurs – Businesses that are not registered as MSME yet, or those with EM-II registration.
2. Existing UAM Holders – Businesses that already have UAM registration and want to update or re-register through assisted filing.

MSME Registration for New Entrepreneurs or EM-II Holders

If you are a new entrepreneur or already have EM-II registration, follow these steps to register your MSME online:

Step 1:
Go to the Udyam registration portal and click “For New Entrepreneurs who are not Registered yet as MSME or those with EM-II.”

Step 2:
Enter your Aadhaar number and name, then click “Validate and Generate OTP.” Enter the OTP to verify your Aadhaar.

Step 3:
Select your Type of Organisation and enter your PAN number, then click “Validate PAN.” The portal will fetch and verify your PAN details automatically.

Step 4:
Once your PAN is verified, the Udyam Registration form will appear. Fill in your personal details and business details.

Step 5:
Enter your investment and turnover information, agree to the declaration, and click “Submit and Get Final OTP.” Enter the OTP to complete submission.

Step 6:
After successful registration, your Udyam Registration Certificate will be sent to your email.

MSME Registration for Entrepreneurs Already Having UAM

If you already have a UAM registration, follow these steps:

1. On the Udyam portal home page, click “For those having registration as UAM” or “For those already having registration as UAM through Assisted filing.”
2. Enter your Udyog Aadhaar Number (UAM).
3. Choose how you want to receive the OTP – on your registered mobile number or email.
4. Click “Validate and Generate OTP” and enter the OTP you receive.
5. Fill in the MSME registration form with your business details.

After completing these steps, your Udyam registration will be successfully done.

MSME Registration Fees

MSME registration is completely free. The government does not charge any fees for registering on the official Udyam registration portal.

 

 

How to Check MSME Registration Status

To check the status of your MSME registration:

1. Visit the Udyam registration portal.
2. Click on ‘Print/Verify’ and then select ‘Verify Udyam Registration Number’.
3. Enter your Reference Number, the captcha code, and click ‘Verify’.

What is an MSME Registration Certificate?

After completing MSME registration, the Ministry of MSME issues an e-certificate called the Udyam Registration Certificate, also known as the MSME registration certificate.

The certificate includes a QR code that can be scanned to access your business details.

How to Download MSME Registration Certificate

To download your MSME (Udyam) registration certificate, follow these steps:

1. Go to the Udyam registration portal.
2. Click on ‘Print/Verify’ and select ‘Print Udyam Certificate’.
3. Enter your Udyam Registration Number and mobile number, choose how to receive the OTP, and click ‘Validate & Generate OTP’.
4. Enter the OTP received on your mobile/email and click ‘Validate OTP and Login’.
5. After logging in, you can download or print your Udyam registration certificate.

What is an MSME Registration Number?

After completing registration, the Ministry of MSME assigns a permanent identity number called the Udyam or MSME Registration Number.

• This is a 19-digit unique number printed on the MSME certificate.
